New Rose Hotel

              
       I decided to research on William Gibson's short story "New Rose Hotel" so I can have a better understanding of what to do for my book cover. By knowing what the story is about that will help me brainstorm more ideas for my cover for my thumbnails.

New Rose Hotel Book Cover Ideas

            We received template in class to use on own design for our book cover. Basically, we are using the typography to create the cover of the book. The challenge is to use only typography to make the book cover interesting. I decided to find covers with only typography for  more ideas to brainstorm on. The font is something that can make or break the book cover. I found some covers where text  is only seen on the cover. My answer is the there is so much that can be done with text to recreate a book cover. There is a lot of ways text can be moved by directional forces to make a shape or even a picture. The artist can ends up recreating a cover that tells you more about the book and makes it more appealing by a creative a whole new cover. The typography is crucial in design for a book cover.

Burning Chrome's Short Stories

                 



                I decided to look up the short stories in William Gibson's book  Burning Chrome, and I have decided to make the cover of the short story New Rose Hotel. Gibson's genre of writing  is called cyberpunk. The story takes place in the future in a business world of corruption, blackmail, and evil. I would  read a short story such as this because I find the science fiction novel interesting overall. The idea that megacorporation's are controlling are economy seems realistic even for today now. I am excited to have researched this author's short stories and writing because in the future I would read his work. I am looking forward to recreating a book cover for this author now that I know some information about him and his genre of writing.

The Undertaking


          I decided to look up successful book  covers out there to get ideas on Project 2. I want to know what tools and ideas I can weave into my design. I know that this project needs the strength of the typography in its design to be successful. I found some good book covers that I thought were successful. The colors need to work well with the typography to create the right image. When you design a book cover you use typography to create the main element of the cover and set the tone of the book. If the cover isn't what the book needs then people may judge it too quickly and never pick the book up. A good cover can make the book more appealing and interesting to its audience and that's what I plan to do in this project.

                 I wanted to see how long this festival has been going on. The festival usually lasts for three days and they have each band and event is planned out. In the past the festival has been always held at Montreal but Toronto is the choice for the venue this year. Like every festival the bigger bands have someone opening for them. The new bands do get a chance to have their time by opening for the bigger bands at least. This does create more fans. It creates a fan base both ways and creates branding and recognition for new bands onto the music seen. This festival obviously is one way a new band cto get started and more ideas can generate from there.

       I decided to look into to some information on past Kinetik shows and what has happened at the past venues. Metropolis is s major performing area for artists in Montréal. It seems like its been hotspot for  traveling artists  and fans from the videos and pictures. However, I  am still researching more about these bands because this music genre is still so foreign to me. Some of the things I  even saw scared me. (lol) I wanted to check out the ticket information and how I could purchase tickets. Like every concert there are special passes and theirs is called a diamond pass that gives to access to extra stuff. The website had all information if tickets where available and also merchandise such as T-shirts to buy. It looks like the tickets sellout rather quickly like a Comic Con event because this  is so huge. You definitely want to purchase tickets as soon as possible for this.  I discovered that the capacity at the venue also seems to play a part in the ticket sales.

         I decided to research on why Montreal addresses are so different because its not like a US address. There are numbers and letters in their postal codes.  America for example has zip codes, but Canada has  something called postal codes  which are number and letter format.  If I wanted to send a letter I would have the person name and street address and  I  would be using a Canadian postal code. The whole code on the address means something and a letter for example is carried to where its needs to go by reading the postal code. To mail a standard letter in Canada it costs 0.65 compared to the US with at 1.10 or 1.34. Mailing a letter in the US is twice as much and I didn't know Canada's postage was cheaper. I looked up the address of the Kinetik Festival and I found the address of the Venue and confirmed with my knowledge to look up addresses in Canada.

             The venue is in Montreal this year and Montreal overall has many features I wanted to check out. I have never heard of any these places so I looked up some information and I figured knowing more about Montreal will help me get a better understanding of Canada just in general. The Ritz-Carlton Montreal is the best hotel to stay at with the best reviews. The Espace Cafe & Espresso Bar in Montreal has a variety of coffee and sandwiches. I know that this type of Cafe I would actually go to. One, it looks inviting and similar to Starbucks or Panera bread and second it looks causal which is something I enjoy. Another place I found is Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and I know being a Art major this is something I would definitely want to see. The museum has many exhibits and the Canadian and Quebec art would be interesting to see. One oil canvas piece I found online I would love to see I person by Marcel Barbeau . I am in love with the impressionist movement in Art.

                  Once again I've never heard of any of these bands playing at this festival so today I decided to give it a shot and listen to some of the bands. One band I listen to was Grendel, I'm thinking of the monster in Beowulf and ironically this band is pretty dramatic. Their sound is very electronic and techno and they originated in the Netherlands and are Dutch. One song by them is called "rise" which I found actually different to listen to  considering this is a type of music I wouldn't listen to often. The lyrics are actually pretty deep if your feeling down and want to listen to this song if your really mad. I'll  keep this band in mind and was surprised that I found an interest in a band playing at this Kinetik Festival. I would have never found out about this band if its weren't for this festival research.

 I decided to some research on the type of people attending at this festival. I'm into classic rock and I've never heard of any of these bands before. It seems that Canada is a popular place that this festival is hosted at. The concert is broken down into three phases so the concert is split up into separate days. I decided to research the venue. Toronto is actually a pretty popular place for  this venue because it works well, it has food and plenty of attractions. The area is busy and full of action.  When I think of Canada for some reason Toronto is the city that comes to mind similar to New York city. The area is very city like and active after looking up places and pictures.  This festival above here is at Toronto and I can see why because not only is it a good venue but the overall demographic is just right. You need to have the right venue and the right audience targeted for a festival like this if you want it to be successful. Other wise, the event will flop and nobody will know about it. Information needs to be received in the right way to its audience.

 The main audience I'm targeting is adults interested in electronic music playing at this festival. I research the kinetik festival, the whole main idea of this concert is about kinetic energy. I found the meaning behind this festival interesting because this type of concert I wouldn't usually attend. The theme of high energy is mostly present in this website, the high energy might be something to consider in my design.
